MORE ABOUT SAL

Officer Role

Vice President, Education & Welfare 2023 – 2024

What did you study?

BA (Hons) Musical Theatre

What SU run events and activities have you been a part of?

During my time as a student, last year (22/23), I was a member of the executive committee as a Student Officer. My main focuses were encouraging volunteering opportunities for students as well as looking at sustainability across the university. I have also spent 3 years as a Winchester Spirits Cheerleader and 2 years as a member of Flyhard Ultimate Frisbee, becoming Social Sec last year. I was also a part of Freshers Crew 2021, as well as being a regular bop attendee!

What are your top Manifesto points?

  • Ensuring that support from our Advice Centre is properly advertised to students of all demographics (including, but not limited to: Commuting, Mature and Part-Time)
  • Creating a reliable and up-to-date platform containing information on industrial action (striking) is crucial, so students understand not only the finer details behind why and how these strikes happen, but how we are able to help mitigate any negative effects they may create
  • A dedication to student welfare by looking at how the timings and dates for our recharge events may not currently be accessible to all students, particularly those with daytime placement elements to their course

What made you run in the Elections to become an officer?

My time as a student officer last year gave me such a positive insight into the impact that the Union has on students. Therefore, quite simply, I didn't want my time to end! The idea to run came to me during one of our clothes drives held last year, where I realised how much this position would allow me to further influence lives of current and future students. This is why I'm so grateful to have been elected as your VPEW.

What’s your favourite thing about Winchester?

Having also attended college in the city, this will now be my 6th year in Winchester! The history and the natural beauty of the area are the main features which encouraged me here to stay.

What has been your proudest moment during your student journey?

During one of my third-year modules of my course, I took part in a production of John-Michael Tebelak and Stephen Schwartz's musical Godspell. This show was not only an inspiration to how I view the community aspects of the Student Union, but I also had to balance my time as a part-time officer, elections week and dissertation hand-in all at the same time!

What do you like doing when you aren’t being a Winchester SU Officer?

I'm an avid coffee drinker and will never refuse a trip to Costa for an iced latte! I also love going on walks around the city, particularly along the river Itchen and to St Giles Viewpoint.

What is your favourite film?

The Book Thief
