Winchester Students' Union is committed to empowering our members through the provision of exceptional student led, and student delivered, activities and services. As part of this commitment, we recognise the vital importance of hearing your views on your student experience, and in giving you the opportunity to input on your Students' Union's activities and direction. Our Student Senate is one key vehicle by which we achieve this goal.
Student Senate is the main policy setting forum of the Union and has Open Zone Forums which act as sub-committees to ensure wider student voice is fed into Student Senate for each area of the Union (Education Zone, Welfare Zone, Activities Zone, Commercial Zone). It is made up of your Elected Officers, who form the Executive Committee of the Students' Union, as well as other elected student members who represent a wide range of student experiences from across the University, including:
Demographic Representatives (put forward by the Union's representational network committees)
Faculty Representatives (selected from elected Student Academic Representatives (StARs)).
Student Senate Zone Represenatives (Education & Welfare Zone Representative and Activities & Commercial Zone Representative)
Student senate has a wide array of functions, and decision-making powers, rooted in the representation of Student Voice. These include receiving reports from the Student Union's Trustees and Executive Officers (i.e. President, Vice Presidents, and Student Officers), making, repealing, and amending the Union's Bye-Laws, setting the Policy of the Union, and the capacity to refer Policy to Referenda - allowing the Union's members to vote on specific changes.
Ultimately, Student Senate, alongside our other forums and committees, gives you a chance to bring ideas forward, voice concerns, and provide an important level of accountability to our organisation in order to ensure that you are represented effectively, and have the best student experience possible during your time here at Winchester - so, make sure you attend as many as possible!
